We have been discussing “hot topics” the last few weeks of school. These topics have been “Should we have junk food in school?”, “Are video games considered a sport?” and “Are trampolines too dangerous?” The purpose of these questions are to get the students thinking about the pros and cons of different topics. Also, how opinions can change after educating oneself by reading articles and conducting research.
Currently, the class is learning about goods and services during integrated literacy. We have discussed how goods and services can be local, domestic, and international. Students have been asked to choose a useful good or service they could provide to Juliette Low Elementary school. They are in the process of reading articles and conducting research on the topic they have chosen, and they are creating a list of pros and cons. They will then take their information and give a speech to their classmates on why their good or service would be beneficial to Low and why it should be implemented.
