First grade is the best time to be a READER! Check these helpful tips to help your first grader grow.

‪Three Ways To Read  A Book

‪

‪

‪At the beginning of the year your first grader will learn there are 3 ways they can read a book. They can practice this anytime they sit down to “Read to Self”.

‪1. They can look at and read the pictures in the story. *Picture clues are a great strategy to practice for  beginning readers. They look to the pictures to identify challenge words or tell themselves the story.

‪2. They can retell a story they’ve read before! Maybe their favorite bed-time story is what they choose to read tonight, but it is a challenge for their independent reading level. Let them retell the story to you based on the pages.

‪3. The last one, is one that can be obvious….read the words!

‪Building Stamina & Read to Self

‪

‪Your first grader is going to be so excited as we build our STAMINA!

‪What is stamina?

‪*It is how long we can do something, like reading, without being distracted, bored or fidgety. We’ll be building our stamina all year long during READ TO SELF!

‪What is Read to Self?

‪    – It is a time during the day, or in a center that we take a seat in our special reading spot and focus on reading. We read “just right books” without getting up, talking to a friend, or seeing what others are doing in the room.

‪    -We are able to read our book 3 different ways.

‪    -We are FOCUSED READERS.

‪    -We’re quiet and respectful of the other readers/learners around us.

‪    -We stay in our spot reading the whole time! (Unless of course there is an emergency)

‪Wonderful Ways To Help Your Child Decode A Word

‪I know, it can be difficult with your first grade reader when they struggle with a challenge word, or a sentence. Yet, try your best not to tell them the word right off the bat! Especially if it is a word within their reach. Try reminding your child of these strategies first:

‪*Tap each letter – make the sound for each letter in the word, string and blend them together to sound out the word.

‪    Remind them to flip the vowel sound if you need to! (Like the letter A, makes the “a” in apple sound… and says it name like in the word bake)

‪*Look at the picture for clues

‪*Chunk it! Cover up part of the word and sound out the uncovered half.

‪*Backtrack in the story – Check what you know and have already read!

‪*Skip it and move on, but make sure to come back to guess a word that might make sense.

‪Still looking for more ideas while reading with your child at home? Want to help build their understanding and comprehension? Please ask for tips and tricks to be sent home in your child’s red folder. Of course, if you have a more specific question, always feel free to contact me.

‪most importantly… KEEP READING EVERYDAY 🙂
