What began as a typical school day for Rupley first grader Mia Williams ended up being anything but ordinary.

An incredible surprise was planned for Mia, whose father, Petty Officer Morry Williams III, came to school to see his daughter for the first time in over a year. Officer Williams is a missile technician in the Navy and has been deployed on a submarine on assignment up until recently.

Mia’s teacher, Mrs. Sharon Olson, coordinated the time of the reunion when it was Mia’s turn to be “Star Reader” in her classroom. The “Star Reader” experience is designed to give all students a moment to shine by letting them have the opportunity to select the book of their choosing and show off their reading progress in front of the class. Mia’s turn was made exceptional when her father appeared as she was reading her book to the class. As she was reading her selection, “Let’s Go For a Drive” by Mo Williams, her father appeared in the doorway with a smile and waited for her to notice.

Mia’s mother, Antoinette, and Papa were also present to share in the reunion. She expressed that she was glad it happened at Rupley, so Mia could see firsthand from the students’ reactions that her father’s work is greatly appreciated and very important.

Mrs. Olson asked Officer Williams to explain to the class why his service in the Navy is so important. She said, ‘I think it’s such a unique way to honor not only Mia’s dad for his service, but to remind ourselves that the whole family is affected when a family member serves our country.’‘
